Picture of the Month – February 2024

When the photo gallery brief is inspired by X, in practice we can be prompted either to make a fresh image or seek one from our archive. Martine Knight’s talk on architectural photography brought 13 images to the gallery. They were discussed (along with UMCC transatlantic photo swap images) during the final Zoom-only meeting of winter 2023-24.

Mike Mellers and Chris Chandler both produced striking images of contemporary buildings, Mike’s of Daniel Libeskind’s Imperial War Museum North, Salford Quays. Chris was able to get close enough to the Scottish Event Centre’s armadillo to fill her phone’s viewfinder. Swooping aluminium curves and lines (designed by Norman Foster and partners in the 1990s) are claimed to be inspired by ships’ hulls, not Sydney opera house. They were illuminated on that occasion in Kermit green against a dark Glasgow sky. Chris’s “Wow, I wish I’d taken that one!” image has to be picture of the month, March 2024.
