Picture of the Month – September 2026

LIGHT AND SHADOW by GRAHAM WOOD

It was quite hard to select a picture of the month from the Trees in the Landscape gallery, as there were some excellent images to choose from. I found it helpful to be able to leisurely go through the whole gallery on my computer at home, rather than rely on one viewing at the SPG evening, bearing in mind the imperfections of the projection equipment. After some deliberation, I selected Graham Wood’s ‘Light and Shadow’. The picture is a portrait format image of trees on a slope, with the emphasis on the contrasting tree trunks. The image quality is very fine and the subtle grey-green colour palette subdued and almost monochrome. The nearest tree is quite dark and mysterious, with a few bits of dappled sunlight falling on the trunk. The eye is then drawn towards the centre distance by the cluster of light, silvery tree trunks. It is a photograph that benefits from sustained viewing, absorbing for both the wealth of detail contained and the moody atmosphere generated.
