MORECAMBE REDS by IAN HUGHES
The difficulties of choosing from the images in the “Morecambe” and “Inspired by Alf Evans” galleries were a combination of the many problems encountered by previous judges as both galleries had a number of images of a high quality and choosing has changed several times. Both galleries had a similar area of subject matter, and the Morecambe gallery had a predictability of promenades, cafes, back street dereliction, and, of course, the Midland Hotel.
Several images had an immediate impact….John Bentley’s “Promenade” using the large Frame as an intriguing device within the composition……Paul Hargreaves’ “Deep in thought” evoked a wider illustration of life in Morecambe for certain individuals using a monochrome style….the simplicity of ENW’s “Business on the Champs d’Elysees” appealed immediately….I will not refer to the colour choices…placing the subject perfectly within the composition and the use of a relatively unsaturated colour palette……”Laos boys on a bike” had an immediate impact, the sheer joy and sense of adventure was immediate.
However, I have chosen “Morecambe Reds” from Ian Hughes as my POTM. The main elements may not precisely fit the rule of thirds but perhaps this is where the rule is a guide rather than a dogma!… they appear to sit OK to me. I also was intrigued by the strength of the red elements…how powerful they are compared to the background. This combination of strong subject colour and a relatively unsaturated background I found appealing. Sometimes I am sure these considerations may be accidental…. however, if they are searched for and found, they contribute to the photographer’s skill.
