FELL GATHER AT INGLEBOROUGH by JOHN BENTLEY
I have chosen John Bentley’s shot of hill farmers as this month’s Picture of the Month. This is a most unusual and striking image, which makes good use of the rare occurrence of a weather inversion. This allows the farmers to be silhouetted against the inversion cloud, whilst the hills project above it. Whist not sunlit, there is plenty of contrast in the picture, with a good tonal range; sharpness is excellent. If any criticism is appropriate, I would crop some of the foreground off the bottom, to place the line of farmers on the “thirds” line. However, John did mention that the image is to be a book cover shot, so the excess foreground would be a suitable place for the book title, etc. All in all, a striking shot which summarises the presence of hill farming in Craven so well.
