Hoylake Camera Club holds an annual competition open to anyone in the world, under categories of Open Colour, Open B&W, Nature, Photo-Journalism and Photo-Travel. Two of the judges will show a sample from this year’s competition and initiate discussions over the winning entries – members free to comment/ask questions on each.

John talked to us in 2014 with many photos covering his live music images - this time his talk will be about documentary and street images, all taken in Yorkshire and will include a number he has scanned from his significant collection taken pre-digital.

He has spent the winter being the Northern Lights guide at Abisco National Park in Sweden, well within the Arctic Circle. I have asked him to show his stunning images taken during this winter, including Northern Lights, Winter scenery and artistic winter images. He will also include some of his favourite images from the UK.

Visit to Roundhay Park, Leeds, LS8 2HH. Meet 11 am at Tropical World, Prince's Avenue by the cafe.

Roundhay Park now covers over 700 acres of parkland, lakes and woodland and is one of the largest urban parks in the world. The Park has a scented for the blind, National Plant Collections, Canal Gardens, the Monet and Alhambra Gardens, plus Tropical World (also known as Butterfly Gardens and Butterfly World) which attracts visitors all year round. Newly opened in 2005 is the Friends Garden, located alongside Canal Gardens and the Rainbow Garden. In the 21st century, following extensive renovations to the park a new area of award winning 'Chelsea Gardens' has been created where gardens created for the Chelsea Show have been rebuilt for all to enjoy in the 'Speciality Gardens' area just off Mansion Lane.

The simplest way to get there is A65 to the outskirts of Leeds, turn left (east) on the Ring Road (A6120) and follow the signs to the park. There are several car parks in and around the park, also plenty of street parking.

An entertaining evening is promised! Expect the unexpected! Tony is a very experienced (Grand Master PSA and Platinum FIAP in Photo Journalism/Travel) and well thought of photographer. He will bring a large number of his award-winning A3 prints (many on Photo-Journalism/travel) and talk informally about his techniques and will encourage debate about photography in general.

Thorns is an abandoned farmstead, full of interest and atmosphere. It's about 3/4 mile walk each way, generally easy underfoot but with a short, steep slope to negotiate.
